William Spencer Obituary

William Harrison Spencer, 82, of Punxsutawney, passed away on Monday, December 4, 2023, at his home.

He was born in Punxsutawney on September 14, 1941, a son of Harlan Floyd Spencer and Olive (Lewis) Spencer.

Bill proudly served in the United States Navy from 1959 through 1964.

On May 10, 1961, he married the love of his life, Jane Ann Wehrle.  Jane preceded him in death on August 05, 2022.

Bill was a self-employed entrepreneur and his talents ranged from Spencer Refrigeration to Spencer Realty and co-owner of Sycamore Apartments.

He ran on a write in campaign and was elected in 1997 to serve on Punxsutawney Borough Council, where he served for over a decade. He was not afraid to stand up for what he believed in.  He also was a Volunteer Fireman for Central Fire Company for many years.

Bill will be remembered by many for his kind heart and giving nature.  He was a mentor to many young men by employing them and teaching them skills.  His beliefs were “you gotta give people a chance” and “you never throw people away.”

He loved his daughters.  He loved all animals, particularly dogs, who traveled with him all over town.

Going to the Casino was his favorite pastime and Spanish Blackjack was his game of choice.  He spent many nights in the Card Room of the Pantall Hotel playing cards with Doc Saldana, Tom Barletta, Lester Pete, Jane Cunningham, etc.

He was a frequent patron of local establishments, especially for breakfast.  He was well known at Burger King, Lily’s Place, Rumors, Grandma’s Kitchen, etc.  His family would like to thank these establishments for always treating Bill with kindness and great respect.

He is survived by three daughters, Julie (Michael) Spencer-Banks of Sharpsburg, Georgia, Susan (Ken) DeCourcy of Dallas, Georgia, and Tricia (Scott) Babco of Punxsutawney; eight grandchildren, Lauren Deourcy, Lakin DeCourcy-Robinson, Natasha Vaughn, Danielle Reitz, Meagan DeCourcy, Lucus DeCourcy, Chelsea Dallas and Parker Babco; eleven great grandchildren; one brother, Richard “Dick” Spencer of Punxsy.

Preceded in death by his parents, wife Jane and two sisters, Judith Redding and Janene Spencer.

Arrangements are private and under the direction of Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.
