Walter Thomas “Tom” Smouse, 84, of Punxsutawney, passed away on Monday, May 29, 2023, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
He was born at home in Albion on August 31, 1938, a son of the late Walter Thomas Smouse and Agnes (Rankin) Smouse. He was lovingly raised by his maternal grandparents.
At the age of seventeen, he moved to the New York area and got a job cleaning floors at the second largest Construction Company, Johnson Drake and Piper. He worked his way up in the company and later became a superintendent.
He was drafted during the Berlin Crisis and served in the United States Army for two years. He earned the Expert Rifle and Good Conduct medals.
Tom later started WA-CO Drilling and owned and operated that business for nearly twenty years.
Tom was a people person, he enjoyed visiting with people at the local coffee hangouts, he always had a quick one liner to make you smile.
He is survived by two sons, Brian Thomas Smouse of Pittsburgh and Shawn Michael Smouse of Sahuarita, Arizona; two grandchildren, Carissa and Patrick Smouse; one sister, Delores “Dolly” Guzzo of Punxsutawney.
He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and two sister, Babe Perry and Shirley Ann Durst.
In accordance with Tom’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Arrangements entrusted to Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.
Interment will be at Ridgemount Cemetery, Bell Township.
