Ruth Lewis Obituary

Ruth Joyce Lewis, 88, of Punxsutawney, passed away on Thursday, May 04, 2023, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born at home in Rossiter, Indiana County, on January 14, 1935, a twin daughter of the late Edward Miles Pierce and Lillian Belle (Veite) Pierce.

On June 25, 1954, she married Orrie Dean Lewis.  He preceded her in death on November 16, 1988.

She was a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church.

Ruth formerly worked at Rola, the Shoe factory, Paris Cleaners and cleaned the church and various other places with her sister Bonnie.

She loved her family dearly, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, she was lovingly referred to as “Granny Lewis.”  She enjoyed going to the beach every summer, camping in the Tionesta area near Minister Creek, shopping, and bus trips to New York.  She also enjoyed baking and cooking.  She had an incredible bond with her sisters and enjoyed spending time with them, just laughing and enjoying the day.

Ruth was a kind and generous soul. She was a prayer warrior for her family.  She wanted to see all her kids and grandkids in Heaven.

She is survived by two children, Larry Dean (Shirley) Lewis of Rochester Mills, and Sherry (Ronald) Seger of Rossiter; three grandchildren, Larry (Alicia) Lewis, Julie (Mike) Cressley and Katie (Nathan) Colgan, all of Punxsutawney; seven great grandchildren, Nolan and Adelynn Lewis, Braylee, Mylee and Brantlee Cressley, Kali and Natalie Colgan; her twin sister, Ruby (William) Yount, and sisters Bonnie Huey, and Linda Jordan, all of Punxsutawney.

Preceded in death by her parents and husband Dean; infant sister, Dorothy Irene Pierce, and sisters, Maxine Wissinger and Betty Palmer.

Friends will be received from noon until 2 p.m. Monday, May 8, 2023, at Shumaker Funeral Home, inc., Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, officiated by Pastor Earl Flick.

Interment will follow at Mt. Tabor Cemetery, Oliveburg.
