Robert Dalton Buffington, 95, of Big Run, passed away on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at Mahoning Riverside Manor.
He was born in Hawthorn on June 10, 1929, the son of the late Dalton Reuben Buffington and Mary Elizabeth (Burkett) Buffington.
Mr. Buffington was a United States Army Veteran and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal Japan.
Bob was methodist by faith.
On September 23, 1951, he married Margaret “Peggy” Jane Bitters. They enjoyed seventy years of marriage prior to her death on November 2, 2021.
Bob and Peggy enjoyed traveling the eastern side of the United States by car, they particularly enjoyed Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Nags Head, North Carolina. Golf was previously one of Bob’s favorite pastimes with his buddies. He also enjoyed watching the birds on the back porch. He will be remembered as a very generous man, always lending a helping hand, especially for his family.
He was a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of the American Legion for over fifty years; he was also a member of the Reynoldsville Elks.
He is survived by one son, Lynn (Sandy) Buffington of Big Run; daughter in-law, Kathy Buffington of Glen Campbell; three grandchildren, Brandi Buffington, Jennifer Buffington and Harley (Heather) Buffington; five great grandchildren, Brycen, Riley, Hadleigh, Jenson and Jake; two sisters, Mary Lou Hill of Big Run and Norma Jean “Jeanne” of DuBois; two brothers, John Buffington of Mahaffey and Jack Buffington of Big Run.
Preceded in death by his wife, Peggy; one son, Larry Buffington; brother, Donald Buffington.
Friends will be received from noon until 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Big Run.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, officiated by Joseph Buterbaugh.
Interment will follow at McClure Cemetery.
