Mary Jane (Kuntz) Buffington, 80, of Punxsutawney, passed away at her home on March 27, 2022, after a five year battle with the dreaded dementia. She finally got to reunite with her husband, John Buffington, who preceded her in death in 2017. She was born on December 13, 1941 the daughter of the late Mary Ellen and Lorraine Kuntz. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Richard L. Kuntz. She is survived by three children and their spouses: John and Pam Buffington; Cindy and Skip Taylor; and Tom and Kim Dunkel, all of Punxsutawney. She leaves behind a slew of grandchildren and great grandchildren: Johnny Buffington and Rhonda, his children Johnny and Ashton; Sarah and Tom Hanslovan, and their children Benny, Lucy, and Matthew; Stevie and AJ Dereume, and their children Augie and River; Ruben Taylor; Mary and Justin Travis, and their children Jack and Annie; Amy and Reggie Weaver, and their children Merritt and Letta; Emily and Eli McDivitt, and their children Henry and Truman; and Caroline Dunkel and Spencer Levy. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Jean (Kuntz) and Russell Brooks. Jeanie and Russ are the ones that are now taking care of Shorty, Mary Jane’s trusty dog, best friend, and constant companion. Also her in-laws will miss her: Gary and Millie Buffington, Rita and Dean Lukehart, and Kathy and Tibby Divelbiss. Mary Jane also leaves behind some very special people that spent their time talking with and keeping her company each day: Tina Kuntz and Brenda and Emily Sweeney. They made her days be filled with conversation so she was never alone. Mary Jane loved animals, especially dogs and horses. She and her husband rode horses in their younger years, and were active members of the Punxsutawney Saddle Club. They also loved to go fishing and entered many tournaments, of which Mary Jane won many trophies! Donations can be made in her honor to the VFW League’s Rich Kuntz Memorial Field, Maple Street, Punxsutawney, PA. Rich was her beloved brother, who was killed in action in Viet Nam. Not a day went by that she didn’t miss him. Family and close friends will be received at the Shumaker Funeral Home, 115 East Union Street in Punxsutawney, from 11 AM to 1 PM on Saturday, April 2, 2022. A service will follow at 1:00 PM. Interment will be at the Circle Hill Cemetery.
