Margaret "Peggy" Jane (Bitters) Buffington

May 16, 1930 ~ November 2, 2021 (age 91)


Margaret Jane “Peggy” (Bitters) Buffington, 91, of Big Run, passed away on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, at Christ the King Manor.

She was born at home in Big Run on May 16, 1930, a daughter of the late John Lorenzo Bitters and Margaret “Mag” Elizabeth (Lento) Bitters.

Peggy was a graduate of Big Run High School, Class of 1948.

On September 23, 1951, she married the love of her life, Robert Dalton Buffington, they celebrated seventy years of marriage this year. They were honored as the King and Queen of the Big Run 150th Anniversary and were driven through the town in the parade.

Mrs. Buffington was a former member of Big Run Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, the Big Run Free Militia, and the Homemakers Club, now known as Big Run Beta Sorority.

Peggy and Bob enjoyed traveling to Florida each year in January, they also enjoyed Nags Head occasionally. Peg also loved to watch the birds and was very fond of cats.

She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two children, Larry Buffington and wife Kathy of Glen Campbell, and Lynn Buffington and wife Sandy of Big Run; three grandchildren, Harley Dean Buffington and wife Heather of Homer City, Jennifer Buffington of Punxsutawney and Brandi Buffington of Big Run; five great grandchildren, Brycen, Jake, Riley, Hadleigh and Jenson.

She is preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Jack L. Bitters.

Friends will be received from 3-7 p.m. Thursday, November 4, 2021, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Big Run, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Friday at the Christian Church in Big Run.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. at the Christian Church, officiated by Joseph Buterbaugh.

Interment will follow at McClure Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Buffington’s memory to the Big Run Volunteer Fire Company, or charity of choice.
