Margaret "Margie" Canton Obituary

Margaret “Margie” Ellen Canton, 86, of Delancey, passed away on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at Mahoning Riverside Manor.

She was born at home in Desire on August 07, 1937, the oldest child of the late Michael Adam Skarbek and Anna (Surkala) Skarbek.

Margie graduated from Punxsutawney Area High School in 1956.

On November 15, 1958, she married Ronald Jerome Canton.  He preceded her in death on August 17, 2022.

She was a member of the former St. Adrian and SSCD Catholic Church.  She was also a member of Catholic Daughters of America.

Margie worked at Punxsutawney Area Hospital Information Desk for many years where she was the Television Hostess and helped coordinate the volunteers.  She had also worked at G.C. Murphy’s and Prammco.

She was compassionate and humble, her heart went out to anyone in need and stray animals.  She would do all she could to help others, including taking others to appointments, providing food and money if needed.  Margie and her husband Ronnie were instrumental in the Americanization of a Vietnamese family in the mid-seventies.  Many members of the Tran family kept in touch with Margie over the years.

Her passion was Polka dancing and being surrounded by Polka friends and family.  She went dancing all over the state of Pennsylvania and enjoyed every minute of it.

She is survived by one brother, Michael (Wanda) Skarbek of Desire; four sisters, Mary Ann (John) Pluchinsky of Anita, Betty (Jim) Venture of Reynoldsville, Patty (Tom) Ferko of Reynoldsville and Velma Breiter and partner Bill Dombroski of Brookville; one special aunt, with whom she was very close to, Julie Voyten of Ohio; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her parents, husband Ronnie and a sister in-law Mary Jane Clark.

In accordance with her wishes, there will be no viewing.  A Funeral mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at Saints Cosmas and Damian Catholic Church.  Friends will be received from noon until the time of service in the gathering room at the church.  Arrangements entrusted to Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.

Her ashes will be interred at Adrian-Anita Roman Catholic Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made in Margie’s memory to Gateway Humane Society, PO Box 678, Falls Creek, PA  15284.
