Obituary

Larry Dean Buffington, 71, of Glen Campbell, passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2023, at Indiana Regional Medical Center.

He was born in New York City, New York, on January 2, 1952, the son of Robert Dalton Buffington and the late Margaret Jane “Peggy” (Bitters) Buffington.  His father, Bob, survives.

On September 2, 1972, he married the love of his life, Kathy Ann Davis.  They enjoyed fifty years of marriage together.

Larry worked as a Fire Protection Engineer for many years at Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory in Pittburgh.  Bettis led the engineering design, procurement, and construction of the first naval nuclear propulsion plant.

He was a State Fire Instructor for many years and enjoyed sharing his knowledge the students.  He was a lifetime member of the Fairmont-Hahntown Volunteer Fire Department.  Also a member of the Salamander Honorary Fraternity, a National Fire Protection Engineering Honor Society in Maryland.

Larry’s life was full of achievements and accomplishments of which he was very proud of, but nothing made him prouder than his family.  He loved his family, and particularly beyond measure, his grandchildren. 

He also enjoyed fly-fishing in his spare time.

In addition to his wife Kathy, and his father, Bob, he is survived by one son, Harley Buffington and wife Heather of Homer City; four dearly loved grandchildren, Jacob, Riley, Hadleigh and Jenson; one brother, Lynn Buffington and wife Sandy of Big Run.

Friends will be received from 2-6 p.m. Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Big Run.

A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. at the funeral home, officiated by Pastor Jonathan Ditter.

Because Larry strongly believed in helping others, memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Salvation Army, 229 West Mahoning Street, Punxsutawney, PA 15767.
