Obituary

Joseph A. Henninger, 69, of Walston, passed away on Sunday, February 27, 2022, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital with his loving daughter Brooke and goddaughter Beth by his side.

He was born in DuBois on July 3, 1952, a son of the late Edward L. Henninger and O. Ione (Askey) Henninger.

Joe was a member of Saint Anthony Church in Walston and Saints Cosmas and Damien Catholic Church.  He was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus #452.

Mr. Henninger was a United States Veteran of the Air Force and served during the Vietnam War.

On April 27, 1973, he married the former Mary Margaret “Peg” Costanzo.  They enjoyed forty-eight years of marriage and raised a daughter Brooke.  The three were incredibly close and were always found together. Brooke stated “Dad you’ll always be my Hero.”  Peg and Brooke survive and reside in Walston.

Joe became a familiar face at the Post Office in Punxsutawney, he retired after twenty-six years of service.  Following his retirement, he was a courtesy van driver for Jefferson County Ambulance Service.  He was a member of the Eagles and the Walston Club.

He was never one to sit still, he enjoyed people and being out and about.  He was the past President of the Groundhog Festival Committee and a member of the Festival in the Park Committee, he enjoyed helping organize the yearly festivals.  He volunteered for the American Cancer Society, Rally for a Cure which benefitted Susan G. Komen Foundation.  He loved golfing with his wife Peg and friends at Hemlock View Golf Course, he was a member of the Men’s League and the Senior League.  He also enjoyed White Oak Golf Course.

Joe loved to dress up as Santa Claus every year to visit nursing homes and delight small children and families from the local area.  He was “Everyone’s Santa” and loved to make memorable Christmas moments for all those he encountered.

In addition to Peg and Brooke, he is survived by two sisters, Sherry Groves and Andrea Henninger of Arizona; one brother, Eric Henninger of Arizona; numerous nieces and nephews; and a fur grandpup, Jackson, who misses him dearly.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Edward “Ned” Henninger.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2022, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Saints Cosmas and Damien Catholic Church, celebrated by Monsignor Joseph Riccardo.

Interment will follow at Shaffer Memorial Park in Sykesville, where military honors will be accorded by the Jefferson County Veterans Honor Guard.
