John Thomas “Tom” Hetrick, 88, of Punxsutawney, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family, following a brief illness on Friday, June 13, 2025.
He was born in Hamilton on August 23, 1936, a son of the late Emery E. Hetrick and Freda (Miller) Hetrick.
On December 29, 1962, he married his beautiful irish wife, Majorie Jean Keenan. They were inseparable for sixty-three years together.
Mr. Hetrick served in the Pennsylvania National Guard for twenty years.
Tom worked at the Pennsylvania American Water Company for forty years. Following retirement he enjoyed helping at Steve’s Greenhouse. He always had a smile on his face, a great sense of humor and truly enjoyed being around people
At home, he enjoyed gardening and planted impressive gardens and many beautiful things over the years. Tom spent many hours tinkering around in the little barn he built behind his house, this is where he mastered his woodworking skills. He crafted an amazing replica of his home, a beautiful church, bird houses and more. His attention to detail was incredible and truly a work of art. Tom also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Above all, he loved his family. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a true example of a kind, loving and nurturing man whose memory will never be forgotten.
In addition to his wife Marjorie, he is survived by three children, Gregory Scott (Ruth) Hetrick of Mechanicsburg, Linda (Tim) Smith of Punxsutawney and Heather (Clifford) Smith of Punxsutawney; five grandchildren, Brittany (Brian) Lindgren, Carley Barnett, Kaitlin (Hayden) O’Brien, Hailey and Olivia Smith; four great-grandchildren, Cole and Cayden Lindgren, and Alexandra and Gabriella Barnett; one brother, Ronald “Ox” (Rachel) Hetrick of Punxsutawney and one sister, Yvonne Harsh of Virginia.
Preceded in death by his parents, daughter Wendy Hetrick, three brothers, Edward Hetrick, Joseph Hetrick and an infant brother.
Friends will be received from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2025, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.
