He was born on February 27, 1938 in Knox Township, Jefferson County, PA, a son of the late Leo Edward Shaffer and Mary Catherine (Kennedy) Shaffer.

On April 12, 1958, despite the fact of it being the first day of fishing, he married his sweetheart, E. Marie Reed.  She preceded him in death on October 26, 2011.

John was the owner/operator of Shaffer Lumber for over twenty-eight years.  When he was not working the sawmill, he maintained a beautiful garden and took care of his farm.

He is survived by four children, Karen Denis (Kevin) Villella of Punxsutawney, David Allan (Kay) Shaffer of Brookville, Roy Lee Shaffer and Linda of Brookville, and Donald (Jan) Shaffer of Brookville; two grandson’s, Keith (Deb) Villella of Punxsutawney, and Kurt (Dana) Villella of Punxsutawney; two step granddaughter’s Renee (Jason) Stiver of Brookville, and Danielle (Shawn) Dinger of Brookville; two great grandchildren, Samantha and Amelia Villella; five step great grandchildren; three great, great, grandchildren; three brothers, Everett ( Sherry) Shaffer of Brookville, Glenn (Vonnie) Shaffer of Corsica, and Wayne (Rita) Shaffer of Brookville; two sisters, Marie Keller of DuBois and Helen Lockwood of Brookville.

Preceded in death by his parents, and wife Marie, one brother, Paul Shaffer and one sister, Ida Uplinger.
