Joanne Young, 69, of Punxsutawney, passed away January 23, 2024, at her home, surrounded by her loving and faithful family.
She was born on August 3, 1954, in Punxsutawney, the daughter of the late Costanzo “Buck” Verdill and Eleanor J. (Leasure) Verdill.
On September 20, 1975, she married Timothy James Young, who survives.
Joanne was a member of Saints Cosmas and Damian Roman Catholic Church. For eighteen years, she worked at the SSCD school cafeteria. She thoroughly enjoyed being around the children and staff.
Her working career also included Rola Jensen, where she assembled speakers for many years. Joanne was incredibly artistic and shared her love of crafts by opening her own Ceramic Shop at her home. She enjoyed teaching others the art of ceramics and loved to teach children the techniques as well. Later, she opened her own floral shop which she named, December Rose. Prior to her illness, she enjoyed helping her son make floral arrangements when he purchased Roseman’s Florist. Quilting with Bonnie Stuchell and making stained glass art pieces where a few of her other talents.
When her boys were young, she was very involved in the Punxsy Junior Legion baseball. She was very devoted and volunteered many hours to help run the concession stand and was also the treasurer. In her down time, she enjoyed Bingo and going camping with her family.
She and husband Tim were also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 1231.
Joanne is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Timothy Young; three sons: Matthew Young and his wife Randi of West Mifflin, PA, Chad Young of Punxsutawney and Mark Young and his wife Bobbi of Punxsutawney; four grandchildren: Madison, Emma, Gage and Nora Young; and a brother, Carl “Jim” Verdill of Punxsutawney; she was incredibly close with her brother and sister in-laws who lovingly cared for her during her illness; Linda Kucharski, Katrina Young and companion, Pat Harmon, Ed and Violet Gilot, Bruz Young, Steve and Sherrie Young, Ernie and Sherri Young; numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 26, 2024, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Saints Cosmas and Damian Roamn Catholic Church with Msgr. Joseph Riccardo as celebrant. Burial will be in Adrian-Anita Roman Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in her memory to SSCD Church or Punxsy Junior Legion VFW
