James “Sonny” Anthony Yenzi, 93, of Punxsutawney, passed away on Friday, July 26, 2024, at DuBois Nursing Home.
He was born at home in Anita, a son of the late John R. Yenzi, Sr. and Angiolina (Villella) Yenzi. His mother passed away when he was very young and his father remarried, Irene (Williams) Yenzi, and she helped raise him.
Mr. Yenzi was a member of the United States Army and served during the Korean Conflict.
Following his military service, he worked for the Railroad. He later became a self-employed businessman and co-owned R&L Coal Company.
On July 25, 1971, he married Carolyn States. She preceded him in death on May 31, 2009.
Sonny always had a smile on his face and was friends with many people he encountered over the years. He was the “beloved Pa Pa” to many who knew and loved him, he loved his grandkids and great grandson.
He enjoyed watching sports including football, baseball and hockey.
Surviving relatives include three children, Dennis Yenzi of Pleasant Unity, Pennsylvania, Jennifer Blose and husband Robert of Punxsutawney and Melissa Gallina and husband K.C. of Punxsutawney; three grandchildren, Isabella Zimmerman and husband Garrett, Meredith Gallina and fiancé Lukas Deet and Caleb Smith and Brittany Frantz; great grandson, Kinter Deet; one sister, Suzanne Yenzi of Delaware.
Preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, three brothers, Ralph Yenzi, John Yenzi and Frank Yenzi; four sisters, Rachel Cardamone, Ceceilia Borelli, Rosemary Bettino and Lucy Yenzi.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no visitation or viewing. Arrangements entrusted to Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.
Interment took place at Lakelawn Memorial Park, Reynoldsville.
