Jack Johnston Obituary

Jack LeRoy Johnston, 87, of Punxsutawney, passed away on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at Penn Highlands DuBois.

He was born in DuBois on November 06, 1933, a son of the late Ralph Chester Johnston and Marjorie Elizabeth (Clark) Johnston.

He was baptized Episcopalian.

Mr. Johnston served in the United States Army Reserves.

On March 1, 1957, he married the former Martha Bell Smith.  She preceded him in death on November 18, 2020.

In his high school years, he played as a left-handed quarterback for DuBois Beavers.  The team was undefeated and were state champions in 1951.

Jack and Martha founded DuSan Ambulance Service in 1979.  He had previously served as an EMT with Sykesville Ambulance, he also was an EMT instructor for Jefferson County.  Jack also drove a semi for Barletta Quaker Markets and worked at Rockwell.

After retirement he and Martha enjoyed traveling to Yuma, Arizona in a fifth wheel.  He met and made friends everywhere he went.  Jack could strike up a conversation with anyone he encountered because of his cheerful demeanor, sense of humor and easy-going spirit.

In his spare time, he enjoyed radio-controlled airplanes, tinkering around with automobiles, hunting and fishing.  Jack really enjoyed spending time with his great granddaughter Abby doing crazy science projects.  She was the light of his life.

He is survived by three children, William Johnston and wife Connie of Troutville, Brenda Cyphert of Punxsutawney, and Raymond A. Johnston and wife Janet of Pittsburgh; five grandchildren, Mitchell (Jen) Johnston, Jessica (Caleb) Cochran, Tiffany Cyphert, Ryan and Sheena Patricelli; eleven great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, and wife Martha, he is preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Johnston; his twin brother, George Johnston; brothers, Earl Johnston, Ralph Johnston, James Johnston, Seth Johnston, Harry Johnston, and sister, Jane Dequinze.

Arrangements are private and under the direction of Shumaker Funeral Home Inc., Big Run.
