Evalyn Myrtle (Reif) Dalton, 82, of Punxsutawney, passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at the home of her daughter, Karen Dalton Poole.
She was born August 19, 1941, the only child of Alverna Reif, who passed when she was three. Evalyn was raised by her foster family, Mr. & Mrs. Little, and then her grandmother, Gervaise Reif, in Pittsburgh.
She married Edwin A Dalton on April 27, 1962 and enjoyed 28 years of life with him until his death in November 1990 raising their children, running his construction business, maintaining their rental properties, and finally farming after he retired in 1970. The farm in Punxsutawney has been her home since 1970.
Evalyn was loved and will be missed greatly by her family and friends. She was an excellent cook, known for her delicious nut rolls she baked for the holidays and her coleslaw that was a staple at every gathering. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and canning, but will be remembered most for her ability to fix anything using the tools she carried in her purse wherever she went. She loved to travel and drove her friends many places.
Her faith was the cornerstone of her identity. She was active in the Assembly of God ministry as the leader of Singles Assembled for Edification (SAFE) for 20 plus years after the passing of her husband. She later attended Chestnut Grove Church with her family and most recently attended the Christian Missionary Alliance Church, the denomination she was raised in as a child. Evalyn enjoyed sharing fellowship with others during Bible study, church, or sharing a meal.
Evalyn is survived by her three children, Karen (Greg) Dalton Poole of Walston, PA; Paul (Rebecca) Dalton of Apex, NC; and Evalyn T. Forney of Lebanon, PA. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, Danielle (Andrew) O’Leath; Kimberly (Kevin) O’Byrne; Shannon Carpenter; Kayla (Shane) Kerr; Amy Poole; Gregory Dalton Poole; Spencer Dalton; Heather Forney; Fiona Forney; Chance Forney, and four step-grandchildren, Alyssa Westover; Kevin Poole; Cody Poole; and Cheyenne (Tristen) Cook. Evalyn was blessed with many great-grandchildren as well: Lucy and Max O’Leath; KJ, Dallas, Blake, and Ainsley O’Byrne; Kenneth, Lily, and Travis Carpenter; Raelee Kerr; Dakota, Christopher, and Jesse Westover; Bentley, Oakleigh, and Easton Cook. She is also survived by her foster sister, Erma Jean (Little) Pfau of Illinois.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her six aunts/sisters, as well as her dear friend, Jessie Bishop, who she deeply missed.
Friends will be received from 1- 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 10th at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney. A funeral service will be celebrated by Pastor Darrell Smith after the viewing.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the donor’s church of choice.
