Elda E. Wineberg, 100, of Big Run, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at Mulberry Square, with her niece Bev at her side. She recently moved to Mulberry Square from her home in Big Run, where she had lived independently until the age of 100.
She was born at home at the family farm near Pleasant Grove Church in Gaskill Township, Jefferson County, on April 10, 1924, a daughter of the late Murray C. Wineberg and Laura E. (Rhoades) Wineberg.
She grew up on the farm having fun with family and doing the normal chores with her sister Gervin and brothers, George and Darrell.
She was the grateful recipient of the gift of having her high school paid for by her Wineberg grandparents. Elda would walk to and from school from her home in Gaskill Township. In the winter when the weather was too bad, she would stay with her dear cousin Dorothy Stiver in Foxburg.
Her family moved from the farm to Big Run, first to Smyers Street and then moved to Water Street where she has lived ever since. That is when she first had indoor plumbing and electricity, with an outhouse of course.
Elda was a faithful member of the St. Phillips United Methodist Church, now known as Solid Rock Community Church in Big Run. She was a Sunday school and Bible school teacher playing piano and helping young worshipers.
After graduation, Elda entered the workforce at Standard Pennant factory, where she worked for fifty-two years doing chenille sewing.
Elda never married but had a full life spending time with her sister and brothers’ families vacationing, picnicking, swimming, and square dancing.
Many family members were lovingly cared for in illness by Elda, her aunt Elda McCormick, her mother and father, her sister Gervin, brother and sister in-law Darrell and Sara. She took them to doctor appointments, trips to the grocery store all while working, gardening, canning and running a home.
Elda was hard working, determined, well loved woman. That is the reason she lived well these past 100 years.
Watching the Pittsburgh Pirates and other favorite television shows, reading her Bible and Our Daily Bread, reading Amish stories, watching birds, and doing word searches kept her busy.
Surviving relatives include niece Beverly (John) Keeley, nephew, Dennis Wineberg, Nephew Robert (Lugene) Wineberg, niece, Paula (Michael) Wineberg-McCreary.
Preceded in death by her parents, sister, Gervin Wineberg; two brothers, Darrell W. Wineberg and George M. Wineberg; two sister in-laws, Sara (Frieze) Wineberg and Jane (Weber) Wineberg; a nephew, Brian Wineberg and a special niece, Leslie Wineberg.
Friends will be received from noon until 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Big Run.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will follow at Morningside Cemetery, DuBois.
