Obituary

Edith M. Young, 80, of Punxsutawney, passed away September 15, 2023 at her home.

She was born on September 7, 1943 in Youngstown, OH the daughter of the late Eugene B. Mercer and Anna Ruth Waltman. On August 18, 1981 she married David John Young, who preceded her in death on September 11, 1996.

Edith was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. She was the most dedicated mother anyone could ever ask for- she loved her children no matter what and would be there for them.

Edith was a member of the Salvation Army Nazarene Church.

She spent over 60 years being a dedicated pen pal, during her years of writing letters she accumulated over 100 pen pals. Her hobbies included crocheting, embroidering and word books. She loved to read all kinds of books- mostly romance books.

Edith is survived by her five children: Gerald Ferguson Jr. and his wife Lynn of Punxsutawney, Annaruth C. Sanner of Punxsutawney, Marie and Scott Clark of Atlanta, NY, Roy Ferguson and his wife April of Punxsutawney, and David M. Ferguson of Lockport, NY; a brother, Allen Young and his wife Donna of Big Run; and two sisters: Marie Graff and her husband Ray of Tonawanda, NY and Robin Wawrzyniak and her husband Carl of Lackawanna, NY; twenty one grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Denis Watt; six brothers, Robert Mercer, James Mercer, Donald Mercer, Thomas Mercer, Joe Young Jr., Bill Young; a sister, Eleanor Metzinger; two infant brothers and an infant sister.

The family will receive friends from 10am until Noon on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc. A funeral service will immediately follow at 12pm with Pastor Carole Bergman officiating. Burial will be in Mt Pleasant Cemetery.
