Dorothy Shields Obituary

Dorothy Wanda Shields, 77, of Punxsutawney, passed away at home on Tuesday, May 28, 2024.

She was born in Punxsutawney on June 18, 1946, a daughter of the late Homer Pifer and Elva (Rhoads) Pifer.

Dorothy was a longtime member of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church on Airport Road, she was a faithful member and was very active in church functions.

She became the wife of Grant Oliver Shields.  He preceded her in death on June 29, 2003.

Dot formerly worked at Loree Footwear and Standard Pennant Factory.

She was inseparable from her sister, Leora Mae Smith, they thoroughly enjoyed being together doing anything and everything. The two of them often baked for the church and for McCalmont Township Fire Company events and functions.

Dot loved spoiling her niece Patty and her husband Jerry as well as her great niece Amber (Tanner) Soller, great nephew Dakota Lellock, great great niece Molly Soller and great great nephew Jonah Soller.  She loved and supported all of her family.  She was a sweet, kind and generous soul.

In her free time, she enjoyed crocheting and needlework and tending to her chickens.

In addition to her niece Patty, she is survived by three stepchildren, Grant (Jill) Shields, Jr. of Baltimore, Maryland, David “Duck” (Royale) Shields of Home, PA and Michelle (Andrew) Ruggles of Virginia; numerous step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; brother in-law Robert Charles “Midnight” Smith.

Preceded in death by her parents, husband Grant; two sisters, Emma Umbaugh and Leora Mae Smith and one brother, Glenn Pifer.

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday, June 01, 2024, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at noon, officiated by Pastor Tim Spence.

Memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Shields memory to Mt. Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, c/o First English Lutheran Church, 104 N. Gilpin Street, Punxsutawney, PA 15767.

Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Bell Township, Jefferson County.
