Donald “Shag” Slovinsky, Jr., 63, of Big Run, passed away on Friday, November 26, 2021, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital from complications from Covid-19.
He was born in DuBois on October 5, 1958, a son of the late Donald Slovinsky, Sr. and Genevieve (Agnello) Slovinsky.
Don was a member of Saints Cosmas and Damian Catholic Church.
He was a 1977 graduate of Punxsutawney Area High School.
Don was recently elected to the Big Run Borough Council and was to be sworn in January of 2022. His willingness to serve and dedication to the town will be missed.
“Shag” formerly served as a board member of the Punxsutawney Community Center.
He spent his entire life advocating and devoted to caring for others. He previously worked as a manager and support staff of Fayette Resources before deciding to care for two individuals in his home, Eddie and David. Don provided a loving and supportive home for “his boys” and always put their needs before his own. Don had a special place in his heart for Aunt Del and Uncle Joe.
Don enjoyed his life, he liked to laugh and make others laugh. He liked to spend time with friends and family. Don was humorous and often said what he thought, he was not afraid to stand up for his opinions and convictions. In his free time, he enjoyed being outside in the sunshine gardening and tending to his home.
He is survived by two sister, Mary LaBelle and Jerry Farcus of Punxsutawney and Diane Shenkle and husband Bob of DuBois; nieces and nephews, Marcie Wolfe and husband Dan of Punxsutawney, Jessica Cielo and husband Ron of Sarasota Florida, Michelle Elliott and husband Ben of Punxsutawney, Shane Hanley and wife Brandy of Punxsutawney, Josh Slovinsky and wife Brandi of Rossiter, Rachelle Slovinsky of Punxsutawney, Brett Mallory of Rossiter, Jared Mallory and wife Audrey of Sharon; numerous great nieces and nephews; all of whom he dearly loved.
Preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Robert Slovinsky and Richard Slovinsky.
Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney. Masks are required.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Saints Cosmas and Damian Catholic Church, co-celebrated by Monsignor Father Joseph Riccardo and Father William Laska.
