David Hollis Obituary

David Bruce Hollis, 68, of Punxsutawney, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, December 6, 2024, at home.  He was a devoted husband, talented artist, mentor and man of unwavering faith.  His life was a masterpiece of love, hard work, and generosity.

Born in Punxsutawney on December 14, 1955, a son of the late John Laird Hollis and Helen Olive (Yoder) Hollis.

He was a member of the Marchand Methodist charge.

On November 27, 2008, he married the absolute love of his life, Memoree LeCompte.  He adored her and she loved him immeasurably back, they told one another how much loved they each other many times a day.  His kindness, love will be dearly missed by Memoree. Particularly his patience when her compassion for unwanted animals, often turned their home into a sanctuary.

Despite his many talents and pursuits, his greatest happiness came from his family.  He cherished every moment with his sons, Jason and Warren, nephew Labyn, and Ryan “Pipes” Robinson, teaching them, laughing with them and creating memories that will endure.

As a master welder, David transformed metal into art.  His skill and creativity brought beauty into the world, but his greatest legacy was the countless young men he mentored, sharing not only his craft but also his wisdom and kindness by teaching them the trade of welding.  Recently retired, David worked as a pipeline welder for many years at Dominion Gas, now known as Berkshire Hathaway Energy.  He was a member of the John W. Jenks Masonic Lodge in Punxsutawney.

David was an avid reader and historian and had a particular love for exploring the works of the Civil War and the works of Mark Twain.

A man of steadfast faith, he found great joy in preaching as a lay minister wherever he was needed, which included Grange Church of God, Paradise United Church of Christ, St. Johns Reformed Church, Marchand Methodist and Northpoint.

David was a Trump supporter and was thrilled to witness Trump’s election.  His passion for the world around him was matched only by his love for the closest to him.

In addition to his wife Memoree, he is survived by three children, Bonnie Poling of Indiana, Jason Hollis of Gallitzin and Warren (Priscilla) Hollis of Punxsutawney; ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; two brothers, John (Ruth Ann) Hollis of Johnstown and Tim (Jeanice) Hollis of Panama City, Florida; two sisters, Amy (Matt) Taladay and Molly Hollis, all of Punxsutawney; his beloved mother in-law, Dorothy LeCompte; sister in-law Gail (Jonny) Grube; brother in-law, David LeCompte.

Preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Peggy Neal and Sara Edge; one brother, James Hollis.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, December 9, 2024, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home, officiated by Pastor Tom Topar.
