Barbara J. Burkett, 85, of Punxsutawney, passed away at Mulberry Square on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Buffalo NY on August 24, 1939, a daughter of the late Richard M. Edmunds and Ruth (Lovelee) Edmunds.
On June 20, 1959 she married the love of her life John “Jack” Burkett. They shared nearly sixty three years together. He preceded her in death on January 7,2022.
Barbara was a Homemaker and loved to meet and greet people. She was always willing to share a hug with all those that she met.
She was very involved in her community as a volunteer at the Punxsutawney Library where she served on the Board. She also volunteered at the Punxsutawney Presbyterian Church where she was a member. She was also a member of the Beta Sorority, Punxsutawney Eagles Ladies Auxiliary, two bowling leagues. She loved watching her grandchildren play sports, spend time with them, and camping with friends and family. She was an avid Pittsburgh Penguins fan and loved to go to Joe’s Drive-In for ice cream.
She is survived by three children, Deborah (Floyd) Himes of Punxsutawney, Mark (Lori) Burkett of Punxsutawney, and Linda (Jim) Cerminaro of Virginia. Five grandchildren Matthew German,
Amy Bergreen, Jared and Lucas Burkett, and John Cerminaro. Two great-grandsons Zack Sherry and Logan Zeitler and one great granddaughter, Kahlan. She is also survived by a brother
Bruce (Debra) Edmunds and her sister-in-law Nancy (Al) Gaston.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and one brother Jack Edmunds.
Friends will be received on Sunday October 6, 2024 from 2-6 at the Shumaker Funeral Home in Punxsutawney
A funeral will be held on Monday October 7 at 11:00 at the funeral home with Reverend Erin Kobs officiating.
Interment will follow at the Oliveburg Presbyterian Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in Barbara’s memory to the Punxsutawney Presbyterian Church or the Punxsutawney Memorial Library.
