William Ames Ries, 81 of Punxsutawney passed away quietly surrounded by his loving family at Mahoning Riverside Manor on Monday, October 1, 2018. Mr. Ries was born in Weymouth, Massachusetts on January 11, 1937 to the late John C. and Gertrude M. (Durgin) Ries.
Mr. Ries served his country honorably during the Korean conflict in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service. Mr. Ries was particularly proud to have served as a submariner given the particularly rigorous physical and cognitive requirements to qualify and serve in this highly demanding military occupation. Following service to his country, Mr. Reis went on to work as an Engineer for TRW Aerospace for 19 years before retirement. In his spare time, William enjoyed horses and even raised them for a while. He was also especially fond of dogs and the outdoors. William liked to hike, camp; and, was an avid fly fisherman and quite adept at tying his own flies.
Mr. Ries is survived by his two children, Stephanie Kerns and husband Randy of Hawthorne, CA and Ted Ries and wife Susette of Torrance, CA. Mr. Ries is also survived by his nieces, Patricia Bronzo and Abigail Sherwood; and his nephews, Richard Ries and Hank Sherwood, Jr.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Ries was preceded in death by his brother Jack Ries and his wife Therese; and, his sister Liz and her husband Hank Sherwood.
Funeral arrangements are private and under the direction of the Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc of Punxsutawney.
Mr. Ries ashes will be interred in the John Jacob Fisher Post #62 American Legion Plot at Circle Hill Cemetery.
