Viola Jean Thompson, 93, of Big Run, died Sunday, November 19, 2017 at Miner’s Hospital in Hastings, PA.

She was born on January 29, 1924 in Big Run, a daughter of the late Mervin and Ella Cordilla (Gray) Hollopeter.

On November 25, 1940 she married George Harvey Thompson.  He preceded her in death in 1981.

Jean was a member of St. Phillips United Methodist Church in Big Run, where she served in many roles, such as a Sunday School teacher, and as President of the Ladies Missionary.  She always put others before herself, and cared deeply for everyone.

Her enjoyments were her family, word searches, cats and dogs and especially her little dog Cici.

She is survived by two daughters, Carol Brothers of Westover, and Evelyn Sinclair and husband Bill of Big Run; four grandchildren, Kim Carlson and husband Mark of Punxsutawney, Bradley Brothers, Brandon Brothers, and Melanie White and husband Roger “Dubbs”, all of Westover; four great grandchildren; one great great grandchild.

Preceded in death by her husband, parents, son in law, Dallas Brothers; two brothers, Roy and Oral Hollopeter, one sister, Mary Ella Collins.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 pm, Friday, November 24, 2017 at Shumaker Funeral Home, inc., Big Run, and from 10 -11 am Saturday at St. Phillips United Methodist Church in Big Run.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am Saturday at the church, officiated by Pastor Carole Bergman.

Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Big Run.

Memorial donations may be made in Mrs, Thompson’s memory to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
