Velva Titler

Velva L. (Wood) Titler, 74, of Northpoint, PA (Formerly of Punxsutawney), passed away peacefully Friday, June 29, 2018 at home with her family by her side. She had battled Alzheimer’s courageously for the past 15 years. Velva was born in September 1943 in Powell, OH to the late Allen Eugene and Lucy Roxanne "Roxy" (Milnor) Wood. Velva was raised in Wood County, Ohio and attended Westwod High School. 

On October 1, 1960, she married her high school sweetheart, James Leroy Titler. They lived in Toledo, OH before moving to Punxsutawney. In their 52 ½ years of marriage, they were blessed with four daughters; Connie, Cheryl, Deborah Lynn and Cynthia. Velva was a member of Center Hill Community Church in Knoxdale, and was always ready with a smile; a kind word; and a hug for anyone who needed one. She enjoyed reading, taking vacations to Lancaster, PA and the Outer Banks of North Carolina with family and friends. She enjoyed playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She carried many names for Grandma ~ Brown Grandma, Grandma Jim, and her great-grandson affectionately called her Grandma Tipler.

Velva is survived by her daughters, Connie Jordan and husband Tim of Northpoint, PA; Cheryl Curley and husband Roger of Reynoldsville; and Cindy Shiock and husband Dave, also of Reynoldsville. Velva is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren are, LeAnn Meyer and husband Chad, Amy McCombs and husband Randy, Debbie Schaffer and husband Jimmy, Jill Curley, Jacob Shiock and wife Sara, and Luke Shiock. Her great-grandchildren are, CJ and Maria Meyer, Haley, Hannah, Hope, and Harrison McCombs, and Grace Schaffer. Velva is also survived by one sister, Marvene Farthing and husband James of Whitehouse, OH; a brother, Raymond Wood and wife Hazel of Swanton, OH; and, a sister-in-law Barbara Jean Chapman of Milton Center, OH; she is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Velva was preceded in death by her husband, Jim in June 2013, her parents, Allen and Roxy Wood, and an infant daughter, Deborah in 1968.

Friends will be received from 6-9 p.m. Monday, July 2, 2018 and from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Center Hill Community Church in Knoxdale, officiated by Pastor Guy Felmlee. Friends will be received at the church from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service.

Interment will follow at Circle Hill Cemetery.
