Shirley Mae Sloniger

Shirley Mae Sloniger, 81, of Punxsutawney passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Mayport on Wednesday, June 5, 2019.

She was born on October 17, 1937 in Ripley, New York a daughter of the late Roy and Vera Anna (Newberry) Wells. 

On August 11, 1956 she married Ray Eugene Sloniger.  He preceded her in death on July 25, 2018. Together they enjoyed nearly sixty-two years of marriage.

Shirley attended the Allegheny Wesleyan Methodist Church for many years with her husband and children.

She will always be remembered for working at her desk, personalizing cards for her family.  She kept a meticulous calendar of birthdays and important events to never miss a special occasion.

A favorite pass time for her was watching the “Young and the Restless” soap opera.

She is survived by four children, Melinda Hosey and husband Ken of Mayport, Ralph Sloniger of Punxsutawney, Anna Marie Reitz and husband Jim of Chester, Virginia, and Tim Sloniger and wife Shirley of Timblin, daughter inlaw Cheri Sloniger of Punxsutawney; ten grandchildren, Christy Stratton and husband Mike, Jenny Troyer and husband Stephen, Josh Hosey and wife Jennifer, Selina Scarpaci, Trent Sloniger, Travis Sloniger and wife Brittany, Ryan Reitz, Tyler Reitz, Jordan Sloniger and Jason Sloniger; nine great grandchildren and one on the way; two sisters, Mary Wells and husband Bill of Jamestown, New York, and Judy Marrianni of Florida.

Preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Jim Sloniger, two sisters, Nettie Bailey and Harriett Nelson, four brothers, infant Edwin Wells, Edward Wells, Jay Wells and George Wells.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 Friday, June 7, 2019 at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wesleyan Methodist Church, officiated by Pastor Steve Cassidy.

Interment will be at Circle Hill Cemetery.
