Rita Marie Volpe

Rita Marie Volpe, 85, of Punxsutawney, passed away Friday, July 5, 2019 at King Manor in
Neptune, New Jersey.
She was born January 09, 1934 in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Steve and Mary
(Rutkey) Shiock.
In June of 1959 she married Guido Frank Volpe. He preceded her in death in 1978. Following
her husband’s death she met a great friend in Jim Rugh, together they enjoyed many good
years of companionship.
Rita was a member of Saint Cosmas and Damian Catholic Church.
She first worked as a receptionist at Punxsutawney Area Hospital and that is where she met her
husband Guido. She later worked in the cafeteria for the Punxsutawney School District for
many years.
Rita was energetic and loved helping people. Her enjoyments were walking everywhere she
wanted to go, shopping, playing the slots at the casino, and baking. In her later years, she
looked forward to the simple pleasures of a hot bath and eating ice cream every night.
She was a member of the Punxsutawney Eagles.
Survived by two children, Michael Joseph Volpe of Philadelphia, and Tina Marie Gleason of
Union Beach, New Jersey; three grandchildren, Aisha Sanders and husband Mike, Scotty
Gleason and Cory Gleason; her twin sister, Rose Smouse of Buffalo, New York, and sister,
Patty Bozic and husband Frank of Punxsutawney.
Preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, William Shiock and Bernard Shiock,
two sisters,Elizabeth Uzzo and Beatrice “Bishy” Christopher, and companion, Jim Rugh.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at Shumaker Funeral
Home, Inc, Punxsutawney.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Saints Cosmas and Damian Catholic,
celebrated by Monsignor Joseph Ricardo.
Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
