Leila Smith Obituary

Leila Joanne Smith, 84, of Punxsutawney passed away peacefully on Friday, November 15, 2019 at UPMC Hamot Medical Center in Erie, PA.  Mrs. Smith was born in Timblin on March 31, 1935 to the late Carl Albert and Edna Florence (Brocious) Snyder.  She was married to George Hanson Smith and together they made their home in Sprankle Mills, Coolspring and Punxsutawney.  George preceded Leila in death on June 8, 2008.

Besides staying busy working with her husband on their farm, Leila worked at the Brookville Glove Factory for over 22 years, and then with the Brookville Hospital taking care of the elderly.  She especially liked helping her “folks” at their home.  Leila and her husband George were particularly generous always giving of their time helping people.  They also raised Christmas trees on their farm and often made donations of them.  Besides having a kind and caring heart always reaching out to help, Leila liked to keep active engaging in her many passions.  As such she was an active member of the Red Hat Society of Brookville; the Beta Sorority of Punxsutawney; and, the President of the Oliver Township Fire Hall Auxiliary for over ten years.  In addition to her volunteerism, Leila enjoyed playing Bingo.  But most of all, she loved her family and was quite proud of her grandchildren which were her pride and joy.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughter Linda Leasure and husband David of Roper, NC; a sister, Susan Bole and husband Ron of McKean, PA; and a sister-in-law, Louise Snyder of Edinboro, PA.  She is also survived by two grandchildren, Brandon Travis and Tiffani Travis; two step-grandchildren, Brian Leasure and Jodi Brown; three step great grandchildren, Bradley Leasure, Maleigha Gardner and Meaghan Bennett.

In addition to her parents, and her husband George, Leila was preceded in death by four brothers, Ezra, Don, William, and Vernon Snyder.  She was also preceded in death by three sisters; Judy Kanis, Bernice Doverspike, and Anna Sherry.

Friends will be received at the Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc in Punxsutawney on Monday, November 18, 2019 from 2 – 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home immediately following visitation at 7:00 p.m. officiated by Pastor Johnny Pennington.
