Larry Charles Thomas, 72, of Punxsutawney passed away quietly on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at Mulberry Square Elder Care and Rehabilitation Center.  Larry was born on September 11, 1944 in Reading, Pa to the late Charles Winfield and Dorothy Marie (Becker) Thomas.

Larry was a U.S. Marine veteran having served during the Vietnam War and retired as a police officer for the Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he served for over twenty years.   Larry was an avid outdoorsman, a life-long member of the NRA, and a member of the Rossiter Sportsman Club.   He enjoyed being outdoors and loved to hunt, fish, bike ride and work in his garden.  It was the outdoor life where Larry found his solace especially while walking his border collies -- Casey and Suzie.  He loved his dogs; particularly, his first collie, "Casey" which passed away leaving a void in his heart.  Although Larry held a keen fondness for the outdoors and his collies, his family always came first.  He was a great husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who loved his family tremendously.  Larry will be missed by those he loved and those who loved him.

Larry is survived by his wife of nearly 54 years, Joan Marie (Binner) Thomas; his three daughters, Dawn Moore of Brookville, Kelly Phillips and her husband Eddie of Punxsutawney, and Jessica Bowser and Eric Toy of Punxsutawney.  Larry is also survived by his sister, Judy Romig of Hamburg, Pa.  His five grandchildren are, Samantha Coon and her husband Nate, Aimee Moore, Trevor Bowser, Eddie Phillips, Jr., and his wife Kelly, and Kayla Smith and her husband Justin.  His two great-grandchildren are, Ruby Coon and Finnlee Phillips.

Larry was preceded in death by his son-in-law, David Moore, and his brother-in-law, Douglass Romig.

Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2017, at the Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.  A private funeral service will be held at a later date.

Larry will be interred at the Hopewell Cemetery in Frostburg.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Larry's memory can be made to the Willow Run Animal Sanctuary, 381 E Branch Rd, Brookville,  PA 15825; or, to the Charitable Organization of the donor's choice.

Online condolences may be made at www.shumakerh.com.
