M. Ruth (Gibson) Atherton, 86, of Punxsutawney, died on Monday, April 02, 2018 at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born on March 15, 1932 in Gaskill Township, Jefferson County, a daughter of the late Edwin Forest and Ella Mae (Miller) Gibson.

Ruth married Norman Atherton in 1987.  The enjoyed nearly twenty years of marriage together prior to Norman passing away in 2008.

Shortly after high school graduation, she started work as secretary at T.W. Phillips in Punxsutawney and worked there until she retired.

After retirement, she and Norman spent six months a year in Canada which is where he was born and lived prior to meeting Ruth.

Her previous enjoyments were knitting, quilting and hand crafting.

She is survived by a step daughter, Laurie Davis and husband Ken of Toronto, Canada, grandchildren_____; one sister, Martha Shugarts and husband Ron of Punxsutawney; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, John L. and Edwin Gibson; one sister, Flora Mae Fockler.

Friends will be received from 7-9 p.m. Friday, April 06, 2018 at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, officiated by Pastor Ken Davis and Pastor Greg Smith.

Interment will follow at Circle Hill Cemetery, Punxsutawney.
